Must. Win. Game.

Tonight’s game between Vancouver and Colorado at GM Place is likely to be described by most observers with a typical hackneyed hockey phrase: the must win game.

For the Canucks, a loss coupled with a (likely) Nashville victory over St. Louis will result in the Canucks on the outside looking in again in the Western Conference.

As each team has three games remaining (including tonight), any slip-up will result in an advantage for the other team. As it stands right now, the Canucks have the advantage (being one point ahead), needing only to capture the same amount of points (or more) that Nashville does over the course of these last three games. In short, then, the Canucks need to win tonight to maintain that advantage.

(The astute reader will note I am writing off those pesky kids from Edmonton. The fact of the matter is the Oilers have only two games remaining and a single loss in either coupled with a single victory by Nashville and/or Vancouver eliminates them. I suppose the Oilers could win both games (one of which is against the Canucks) maxing out at 90 points, Vancouver collect no more than two points from the two games not against Edmonton (a tie on 90 points will favour the Oilers on wins) and Nashville collect no more than three points from their remaining three games (a tie on 90 points would also favour Edmonton), but I think any right-minded person will acknowledge this scenario is highly unlikely.)

The important question: Do I think the Canucks will win tonight?

Despite my misgivings about the team’s play of late, I suspect we will see a Canucks team that resembles the one who battered Calgary on Sunday rather than the one who went 0-4 in the previous four games. If my hunch is correct, the Canucks will win this game.

Side prediciton: the Super Twins wake up and terrorize the Avalanche with a vengeance tonight.

Go ‘Nucks.

Nashville comes back from 3-0 down to win. Vancouver blows a 2-0 lead and plays as if they couldn’t care less.

    Inept. Gutless. Embarrassing. Grim.

    Frustrated, angry rant over.

    So frustrating…

We have been up 2-0 twice now and have not been able to close out. This sucks.

Ain’t no time to look at positive and negatives, just time to get behind your team and cheer them into the playoffs…
